Shin Won-sik, in response to a question about J-Hope’s social cancellation, said, “The sight of dirt-stained military uniforms is the greatest public interest.”

 

In relation to the military service of BTS members, Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik expressed his perspective, stating, "I believe it is in the public interest to witness well-known celebrities putting in hard work, sporting muddy military uniforms, and exuding a bright smile."

 

Minister Shin made this response during the general policy inquiry of the National Assembly's Budget and Accounts Special Committee when queried by Rep. Lim Byeong-heon of the People's Power Party. The inquiry focused on the recent cancellation of J-Hope, a member of BTS, as the emcee for a military event.

 

Emphasizing the significance of famous K-pop singers like BTS showcasing their military service, Minister Shin remarked, "They view these appearances as a genuine source of national pride, contributing to the enhancement of our country's prestige, rather than merely achieving top positions on the Billboard chart."

 

Minister Shin acknowledged that celebrities-turned-soldiers often engage in public service activities and serve as public relations ambassadors or emcees for major military events. While recognizing the importance of such roles, he reiterated the importance of soldiers, who were once celebrities, remaining dedicated to their assigned duties.

 

Simultaneously, he added, "We will exert our utmost effort to ensure that our citizens perceive military service as a source of pride and an inherent right, even a privilege of free citizens, rather than considering it as an inconvenient and burdensome duty to be avoided."

 

Rep. Lim concluded by stating, "The minister should pursue what he believes in and strive to cultivate soldiers deserving of the title."
